We know that skincare is deeply personal, and once you find something your skin loves, you don’t want to give it up. We want you to let Phyla be that system.
For best results, we recommend that you use the Phyla system on its own. However, if you have other must-have products in your regimen (such as other active ingredients), we recommend you use the Phortify Phage Serum at night and your other products in the morning.
Not only will this reduce the ingredient burden on your skin, but it will give our phage the best chance to work hard all night to recalibrate your microbiome and keep those breakouts at bay!
We recommend a powder-based or mineral-based sunscreen like zinc oxide. Many sunscreens contain an ingredient called silicone (likely seen as dimethicone). Products with silicones will reduce the effectiveness of the phage and make the serum less potent.
Silicones, like dimethicone, are occlusive, meaning they form a layer on the surface of your skin and create a barrier. Occlusive ingredients have also been known to lead to breakouts since it can trap comedogenic substances in your skin.
If you need recommendations for a silicone-free sunscreen, reach out to us and we can provide you with some options!
We are proud to make 100% of our formulations in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA. Our proprietary ingredient is made in small batches and with exacting standards at our local manufacturing facility in Sonoma County.
The Phortify Phage Serum contains our proprietary live phage, and it needs to be refrigerated when not in use.
The serum is stable for up to 2 months without refrigeration. So a week or two on vacation is no problem! However, we do recommend putting it in the refrigerator as soon as possible upon arrival, as it will last up to 6 months being refrigerated.
While some of our customers see quick acne relief with our system, we highly recommend using our products as part of your long-term skincare regimen.
Patience and consistency is key when it comes to healing acne. You may see acne improvement within the first few weeks, but most customers report clearer skin around the 2-4 month mark of continued treatment. For best results, we recommend that you use the Phyla system twice daily. This will establish a healthy microbiome and ensure that there are no gaps in usage for your acne to relapse.
Acne is a chronic skin condition, and fixing it takes time. Remember that your relationship with your skin is for life, and you will reap the benefits of a healthy microbiome long after your acne is resolved.
While in most cases we did not see the skin get worse or have any side effects (like redness or irritation), it is possible that your skin goes through a purge due to the recalibration process of your skin microbiome.
We recommend using the Phyla system twice daily for at least 2 months to rebalance your microbiome and see your skin health improve for the long term.
This is possible. With any new skin care treatment, the bacteria on your skin needs to re-adapt to its new regimen. Since everyone’s skin microbiome is different, no two microbiomes will react in the same way to this recalibration.
During your first 60 days, an increase in breakouts is possible. Clinically, this is called 'a purge' and it's safe and normal.
Specific to your Phyla regimen, it's a sign that your microbiome is recalibrating and that the serum is working to reduce the overgrowth of bad bacteria. Dermatologists say that, if there’s any purging, it's usually gone 4-5 weeks after starting a new skin-care regimen. This is why we recommend you use Phyla for the full 2 months to see optimal results.
We have observed that with severe or chronic acne (if you’ve had it for a long time with painful flare-ups), then the microbiome takes a while to recalibrate.
This might mean that you don’t see the rapid results that are generally seen with our system.
In this case, it’s best to use the entire Phyla system regularly (day and night) for at least 2-3 months and avoid ingredients (silicones like dimethicone) that might kill our phage.
You might even see your acne get slightly worse before it gets better; but we promise that you won’t experience the dryness, redness or irritation that you’d find with other harsh acne products.
Phyla targets an acne causing bacteria, called Cutibacterium acnes. If it is fungal acne you are concerned with, it's caused by a fungus, not a bacteria. The fungus is usually Malassezia, which is the same fungus that causes dandruff.
While Phyla does not help with yeast or fungal acne, it will still help increase your microbiome diversity and promote a healthier skin barrier. Check out this blog post explaining what fungal acne is and how to treat it.
Yes, Phyla is non-irritating and completely safe to use while pregnant and breastfeeding. However, it is always encouraged to check with your doctor first.
Our products are intentionally formulated to be gentle on the skin. While we can’t always predict how a specific treatment will affect our product, we ensure that our skincare line will not affect your other health treatments. However, it is always encouraged to check with your doctor first.
The Phyla system is designed to be used immediately upon receipt, and completed within two months, while incorporated into a daily skincare regimen.
The Phortify Phage Serum does contain a live phage, and we would encourage you to refrigerate it rather than storing at room temperature.
The Phresh Cleanser has an expiration date on the bottom of the bottle. The Phortify Phage Serum is shelf stable for six months while being refrigerated or for two months at room temperature.
The Phluff Moisturizer is shelf stable for about one year.
Other probiotic skincare brands mostly sell dead, ground-up yogurt bacteria (look for ‘lysate’, ‘ferment’, or ‘extract’ in the probiotic ingredient label). And few skin products contain live bacteria, but those are mostly derived from yogurt or dirt.
Our probiotic is a living microorganism derived from healthy skin, and it specifically targets acne-causing bacteria. Thus we are the world’s first true skin probiotic – from the skin, for healthy skin.
Contact your doctor right away if you experience an allergic reaction. Additionally, please email firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible, and we will work with you to resolve the situation quickly.
While we follow all applicable FDA guidelines, we are not an FDA approved drug. Our phage serum and other products are in full compliance with the regulations for OTC products.
No, unfortunately, our products are not formulated with sunscreen. We strongly recommend you use sunscreen during the daytime to preserve your skin.
However, most sunscreens we have tested also kill our phage (due to the inregdients). Don’t worry, we are hard at work to develop a microbiome-friendly sunscreen that is compatible with our phage!
In the meantime, we recommend either using the Phortify Phage Serum solely at night when you don’t need sunscreen or switching to a natural sunscreen without silicones (like dimethicone).
Yes, our products are 100% vegan and cruelty-free. We hold certifications from the Leaping Bunny Program and PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies Program.
Further, our lab facilities are 100% animal component free.
There is only one strain of our proprietary probiotic, a bacteriophage, which specifically targets the bacteria associated with acne on your skin.
We wanted to keep the product simple in design. Specifically for this acne care line, we are only focused on rebalancing the skin to promote the growth of the non-acne causing bacteria.
We only add the probiotic to our Phortify Phage Serum, while the other two products in our acne care line have been formulated to support the growth of this phage and to not be damaging to the skin microbiome.
All of our products are fragrance-free.
Our Phortify Phage Serum is unscented, and our Phluff Moisturizer is lightly scented with a natural citrus blossom oil.
Yes, all of our products are gluten-free/nut-free.
Our products contain NO sulfates, parabens, or phthalates.
A probiotic is defined as ‘live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host’.
Phages are a relatively new type of microorganism whose role in our health is being studied. Since phages don’t have a classification separate of their own, and fit the definition of a probiotic very well, we refer to it as a probiotic to avoid using obscure terms.
Some might point out that phages are viruses and therefore somewhere between living and non-living. However, the probiotics that we eat in pill form are not ‘alive’ in the pill since they are in a dormant state, and only get activated when they reach the gut.
Similarly, the phages are dormant in our serum, and activate once they encounter bacteria associated with acne.
Our technology is patent pending and is proprietary, but our blog shares a wealth of information about bacteriophages and help to spread the word on why we use this approach to chronic skin conditions caused by bacteria.
We have filed key patents for our proprietary probiotics (patent pending), and no other acne product contains this technology. We are also building on the results of our early testing and conducting a systematic trial to quantify these effects. Further, we have several other products in advanced development that target other inflammatory skin problems like eczema.
We have developed a proprietary combination of the ingredients that you see in the Phortify Phage Serum that keep the probiotic alive.
We built the formulation from scratch, since live phages have never been used in a skin product before.
We tested each ingredient by itself and in combination with others, to make sure that it would keep our probiotic alive and potent.
After 4 years of research, we are proud to have a shelf stable serum with live phages!

Returns & Exchanges
For best results, we recommend that you use the Phyla system twice daily for at least 60 days. Based on our clinical trial and feedback from thousands of our customers, the timeframe to achieve clear skin varies. Some people see rapid results within 2 weeks of usage, while others see results within 6-8 weeks of usage.
During your first 45 days, it's possible that your acne gets worse before it gets better. Clinically, this is called “a purge” and it's safe and normal. Dermatologists say any purging should be over in 4-5 weeks after starting a new skin-care regimen. If you experience a purge, it’s a sign your skin microbiome is changing for the better and the serum is working to reduce the overgrowth of bad bacteria. This is why we recommend you use Phyla for the full two months to rebalance your microbiome and see your skin health improve for the long term!
If you feel like your acne is not improving after 60 days, please contact us and we'll issue a 50% refund. The window for your refund is 60-90 days after delivery of your first order. There will be a small fee deducted from the refund to cover the shipping label. We stand behind the efficacy of our products, so please reach out if you have questions before purchasing.
