While in most cases we did not see the skin get worse or have any side effects (like redness or irritation), it is possible that your skin gets a bit worse initially due to the recalibration process of your skin microbiome. We have tested the integrity of the product up to 1 month at room temperature with no effect on the probiotic. As the product sits at room temperature when it approaches the end of 2 months, it does start to lose some of its integrity as it is alive. So a week or even 2 weeks on vacation is no problem!

We recommend a powder-based or mineral-based sunscreen like zinc oxide and to always apply sunscreen before sun exposure. We know that sunscreens with silicones would probably affect our phage, and just to be safe when using these types of sunscreens, we recommend that you use your sunscreen for daytime use and our serum for nighttime use.

We formulated these products with oily skin in mind, to ensure that our entire line feels light and non-greasy. However, we later found that our products benefit ALL skin types, even sensitive skin and oily skin!

Yes, these products are non-irritating and completely safe to use while pregnant. However, it is always encouraged to check with your doctor first.

The Phyla’s system is designed to be used immediately upon receipt, and completely within 2 months, while incorporated into a daily skincare regimen. The Phortify Serum does contain a live probiotic, and we would encourage this to be refrigerated rather than storing at room temperature (we store it refrigerated before shipping to you)!

The Phortify Serum may also feel more soothing when applied with a light chill to it – kind of like a frosted glass. Ahhh!

Other probiotic skincare brands mostly sell dead, ground-up yogurt bacteria (look for ‘lysate’, ‘ferment’, or ‘extract’ in the probiotic ingredient label). And few skin products contain live bacteria, but those are mostly derived from yogurt or dirt.

We have observed that with severe or chronic acne (if you’ve had it for a long time with painful flare-ups), then the microbiome takes a while to recalibrate.

This might mean that you don’t see the rapid results that are generally seen with our system.

In this case, it’s best to use the entire Phyla system regularly (day and night) for at least 2-3 months and avoiding makeup or other products that might kill our probiotic.

This is possible. With any new skin care treatment, the bacteria on your skin need to re-adapt to its new regimen and rather than call it a purge, we call it a re-calibration of the microbiome.

No, unfortunately, our products are not formulated with sunscreen. We strongly recommend you use sunscreen during the daytime to preserve your skin. However, most sunscreens we have tested also kill our probiotic. Don’t worry, we are hard at work to develop a microbiome-friendly sunscreen that is compatible with our probiotic! In the meantime, we recommend adding the serum at night, when you won’t need sunscreen and, the probiotic can work hard while you sleep.

Yes, our products are 100% vegan and cruelty-free. We hold certifications from the Leaping Bunny Program and PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies Program.

Further, our lab facilities are 100% animal component free.

There is only one strain of our proprietary probiotic, a bacteriophage, which specifically targets the bacteria associated with acne on your skin.

A probiotic is defined as ‘live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host’.

Phages are a relatively new type of microorganism whose role in our health is being studied. Since phages don’t have a classification separate of their own, and fit the definition of a probiotic very well, we refer to it as a probiotic to avoid using obscure terms.

Some might point out that phages are viruses and therefore somewhere between living and non-living. However, the probiotics that we eat in pill form are not ‘alive’ in the pill since they are in a dormant state, and only get activated when they reach the gut.

Similarly, the phages are dormant in our serum, and activate once they encounter bacteria associated with acne.

We can see where that would be a concern as we do ask you to refrigerate our serum upon arrival!

We actually did shipping studies around the country into places where heat excursions occurred and then had the serum sent back to us for testing.

In all cases the serum that was exposed to extreme heat excursions was perfectly fine.

We even tested it in the oven for a couple of days and it was fine.

We do know that after long term storage at room temperature (2 months) or in the oven (3 days!) the serum does start to lose some of its strength, so this is why we suggest that you put the serum in the refrigerator upon arrival, and we keep it refrigerated before we ship it to you.
