Daytime skincare routine: is it necessary?

If you follow a detailed skincare routine at night, with a double cleanse for makeup, you can skip this step in the morning. Splashing your face with water should be fine, unless you have oily skin, in which case you might still want to use a morning cleanser. 

Otherwise, if you don’t have a nighttime routine, always wash your face with a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt and debris from the day before. 


Whether it's daytime or not, moisturizing is arguably the most important part of any self-respecting skincare routine. For daytime use, choose a lightweight moisturizer to make sure it goes well with your makeup and doesn’t melt on your face throughout the day. 

Gel-based moisturizers work best for this, especially during the hot summer months, while cream moisturizers may be better suited for harsh winters. Gently massage into your skin the moisturizer of your choice to ensure it gets absorbed completely.


Sunscreen is an equally important part of your morning skincare routine. It protects your skin from damaging UV exposure throughout the day. You will need a fair amount of it to properly cover your face and neck. You should also reapply your sunscreen throughout the day as much as needed. 


Once you have cleaned your face, you can pat on a toner of your choice. For day time, it is best to opt for hydrating and soothing toners. If you are going to put on makeup later, you can apply a primer to the skin as well. Alternatively, you opt for a product that works as a toner and primer both. 


Light serums such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, antioxidant serums, and vitamin C serums can be used in the morning, too. They help prep your skin by plumping and hydrating it for a better makeup application. Plus, even without the use of makeup, they are great for giving you a natural glow!

Vitamin C especially is beneficial in the daytime. This is because it improves the appearance of uneven skin tones, dark spots, and enlarged pores, while also minimizing damage caused by UV rays and environmental pollution. Note that like toners, serums should also be patted on the skin using your fingertips, not rubbed in.

Granted, it’s best to exfoliate and scrub your skin at night but there’s no law that says it can’t be done in the morning, instead. Similarly, face masks can also be applied in the morning, after cleansing. The best face masks to be used in the morning are ones designed to hydrate and nourish your skin, making it look plump and radiant.
