Products to Pair with Phyla

You’ve probably heard to avoid makeup and sunscreen with silicones and hyaluronic acid while using Phyla. We’re here to break down the reason why and provide some alternatives!

We recommend avoiding hyaluronic acid and silicones (likely seen as dimethicone), since they are not compatible with Phyla. The phage is sensitive to those specific ingredients and it may make the phage in the Phortify Serum less potent.

Silicones, like dimethicone, are occlusive, meaning they form a layer on the surface of your skin and create a barrier. Occlusive ingredients have been known to lead to breakouts since it can trap comedogenic substances in your skin. Because many foundations and sunscreens contain silicones, it's important to find formulas that don't.

Some foundations and sunscreens also contain small amounts of hyaluronic acid, which have also been found to inactivate phages by altering the pH on your skin. To be safe, we would recommend not using products with hyaluronic acid either.

Our team created a list of silicone and hyaluronic acid free products using our own research of fan-favorites.

What to Look for in a Foundation

Identify Your Skin Type
Try to tailor your foundation to your skin type. The main skin types are dry, oily, combination, and normal. On top of your skin type, you may be dealing with a skin issue. These include breakouts, dehydration, sensitivity, and dullness. You’ll want to be mindful of your specific skin issues and skin type, in order to choose the best product. Since foundation isn’t a one-size-fits-all, it may take some trial and error to find the right fit for your skin.

Consider The Coverage Level
Foundations range from light to full coverage. When choosing your foundation, ask yourself how much you want your natural skin to show. A full-coverage foundation can feel heavy to some, especially if you don’t wear makeup often. If this sounds like you, picking a sheerer coverage is a good choice. Sheer foundations are typically buildable, meaning you can add another layer for more coverage if needed.

Determine Your Undertones
Your undertone is the underlying shade of your skin. Skin undertones fall into four basic categories: warm, neutral, cool, and olive. Checking the color of the veins in your wrist is a quick at-home test to determine your undertone. Blue or purple wrist veins typically indicate that you have cool undertones, while green veins equate to warm undertones, and blue-green veins suggest that neutral or olive undertones are present. This will help you choose the correct undertones for your foundation.

Be Mindful Of Ingredients
Being ingredient-conscious when it comes to our skincare products is important, especially when healing acne. The skin is a very important (and our largest) organ. One of your skin’s main functions is to act as a barrier, but it can also absorb a percentage of whatever you put on it. There are over 1500 banned cosmetic ingredients in Europe but only 10 in the USA. At Phyla, we designed and manufactured our product with rigorous quality standards to make sure the product was safe, non-toxic, and beneficial and all of our ingredients are neither banned in the US or in Europe. This is important when looking for other skincare products as well, as certain ingredients can contribute to inflammation and sensitivity.

Below are 10 Skincare Ingredients To Avoid:

  • Parabens
  • Phthalates (diethylphthalate/monoethyl)

  • Formaldehyde (formic aldehyde/methanethiol)

  • Fragrance/Parfum

  • Mineral oil (petrolatum/paraffin/synthetic wax)

  • Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)

  • Aluminum

  • PEG compounds

  • Silicones

  • Triclosan

What to Look for in a Sunscreen

Consider The Application
Sunscreens range from powders and lotions to sticks and sprays. It’s important to determine which one is right for you. Liquid and stick sunscreens are easy to use and you can ensure that it covers your skin. Powder sunscreens are great to take on-the-go and easy to apply throughout the day. Sprays tend to be more sheer than traditional options, but it does come with some caveats. Spray sunscreens may be dangerous to inhale due to the nanoparticles, which our lungs and bloodstream have trouble clearing. The FDA is proposing additional tests for sunscreens in aerosol form to ensure no nanoparticles are released that could damage the lungs. You’ll notice we didn’t include any on our list for that reason.

Be Mindful Of Ingredients
The active ingredients in some SPFs aren't reef-safe and could potentially damage the environment. To ensure that your powder SPF is on the up and up, steer clear of sunscreens with harmful substances.
